About Silicon Image
Headquartered in Sunnyvale, Calif., Silicon Image, Inc. is a leader in driving the architecture and semiconductor implementations for the secure storage, distribution and presentation of high-definition content in the consumer electronics and personal computing/display markets.
Silicon Image creates and drives industry standards for digital content delivery such as HDMI, DVI, and SATA, leveraging partnerships with global leaders in the consumer electronics and personal computing markets to meet the growing digital content needs of consumers worldwide.
The Simplay HD Testing Program provides compatibility testing for high-definition consumer electronics devices such as HDTVs, set-top boxes, audio/video receivers and DVD players, helping manufacturers to achieve compatibility and deliver the highest-quality HDTV experience to consumers.
The company broadens market adoption of the HDMI, DVI, and SATA interfaces by licensing its proven intellectual property (IP) cores to companies providing advanced system-on-a-chip (SoC) solutions that incorporate these interfaces. Silicon Image has become one of the top 10 semiconductor IP licensing vendors in the world, according to Gartner, Inc.
Key Initiatives
Silicon Image’s New Branding System
Silicon Image’s product portfolio is organized into three sub-brands – SteelVine, VastLane and PinnaClear. This branding initiative reinforces the company’s strategy to reach beyond the engineering community and communicate directly with consumers, consumer electronics (CE) dealers and non-technical media. This strategy also reflects the convergence of the company’s CE and PC product lines and the emergence of High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) as the interface of choice for high definition CE and PC connectivity.
- SteelVine: Storage-related products, including storage processors, controllers, port multipliers, host bus adapters and bridges. These products enable simple, reliable, scalable storage of valuable digital assets in consumer devices.
- VastLane: Distribution products, including HDMI and DVI transmitters and receivers, enabling the secure distribution of high-performance digital video and audio in CE and PC devices.
- PinnaClear: Presentation products, including our family of highly-integrated video processors that deliver precision rendering of digital content.
Deep Color™
Silicon Image is the leading manufacturer of Deep Color™ capable HDMI receivers, transmitters and TV processors that allow stunning reproduction of colors on high-definition TVs. Deep Color™ systems are capable of displaying over one billion colors, over 5 times the number of colors available to standard HDTV systems. Silicon Image’s Deep Color™ technology effectively eliminates on-screen banding in areas with subtle gradations of color and enables on-screen images to be more accurately reproduced with the colors in which they appear in real life.
Simplay HD Testing Program
Simplay HD is a consumer electronics testing program designed for leading consumer electronics (CE) manufacturers and technology providers. Current members of the program include Hitachi, LG, Mitsubishi, Samsung, Sony, Thomson and others. The Simplay HD Testing Program is open to all manufacturers of consumer electronics devices implementing HDMI and HDCP including HDTVs, DTVs, Set-Top Boxes (STBs), DVD players, A/V receivers and cables. The program also maintains broad industry support from a variety of leading digital content providers including The Walt Disney Company, Fox, Universal and Warner Bros.
Licensing
Leveraging its expertise as the pioneer and market leader of the popular HDMI and DVI standards, Silicon Image teams with companies to bring standards-based products to market quickly through licensing Silicon Image’s proven IP cores. All cores are fully documented and supported by a dedicated engineering team to assure a smooth integration process. Announced Silicon Image licensees include ATI Technologies, MediaTek, Micronas, Novatek, Samsung, Sunplus, Trident and Weltrend.
Building on our past success, new initiatives to expand and diversify Silicon Image’s market opportunities include two
distinct programs targeting different aspects of the mobile markets -- our MHL and SPMT programs and our work with a
program we call the Personal Entertainment Network or PEN -- a networked, room-to-room, secure, simple, and robust
interconnect technology.

Standards
HDMI
Developed by Sony, Hitachi, Thomson (RCA), Philips, Matsushita (Panasonic), Toshiba and Silicon Image as the digital interface standard for the consumer electronics market, the HDMI specification combines uncompressed high-definition video and multi-channel audio in a single digital interface to provide crystal-clear digital quality over a single cable.
DVI
Pioneered by Silicon Image and introduced by the Digital Display Working Group (DDWG), DVI is the de facto standard for connecting PCs to digital displays.
SATA
Silicon Image has driven development of Serial ATA (SATA), the hard disk drive interface standard for desktop and mobile PCs that is also making inroads in the enterprise arena. Silicon Image is the price/performance leader in SATA motherboard and host bus adapter solutions.
